PRESIDENT CLINTON NAMES EDWARD B. MONTGOMERY AS ACTING DEPUTY SECRETARY
OF THE DEPARTMENT OF LABOR
The President today announced his intent to designate Edward B. Montgomery to serve as Acting Deputy Secretary of the Department of Labor.
Dr. Edward B. Montgomery, of Silver Spring, Maryland, currently serves as Senior Advisor to Secretary of Labor Alexis Herman, and was nominated to be Assistant Secretary of Labor for Policy on May 5. From 1997 to January 1999, Dr. Montgomery served as the Chief Economist at the Department. Previously, Dr. Montgomery was a Professor of Economics at the University of Maryland, College Park. From 1995-1996, Dr. Montgomery served as a Member of the Advisory Panel in Economics for the National Science Foundation. In 1995, he was Vice Chair of the Advisory Council on Employee Welfare and Pension Benefits Plans at the Department of Labor.
Dr. Montgomery received a B.S. degree from Pennsylvania State College and an A.M. degree and a Ph.D. degree in Economics from Harvard University.
The Deputy Secretary of Labor is in charge of supervising the Assistant Secretaries in carrying out the Department's programmatic responsibilities. This includes the Employment and Training Administration, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, the Employment Standards Administration (which includes the Wage and Hour Division, the Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs and the Office of Workers Compensation Programs) and the Pension and Welfare Benefits Administration. Additionally, the Deputy Secretary also serves as the chief strategist and principle liaison to sub-cabinet members in other departments and to the White House.
