STATEMENT BY THE PRESS SECRETARY

Visit of President Cardoso of Brazil

President Clinton and President Cardoso of Brazil met today at the White House. President Clinton congratulated President Cardoso on the substantial progress Brazil has made in recovering from the financial turmoil of earlier this year. President Clinton offered support for President Cardoso's continuing reform program focused on improving the ability of all levels of government in Brazil to meet the needs of their constituents in a fiscally responsible manner. The two leaders also discussed global, regional and other issues. President Clinton noted that Brazil is an important partner of the United States and expressed his interest in continued close consultation on issues of interest to the two governments.
