STATEMENT BY VICE PRESIDENT GORE

Tipper and I would like to take this opportunity to extend warm greetings to everyone celebrating Cinco de Mayo today.

On this day in 1862, Mexico's Army -- though outnumbered and inadequately armed for the battle ahead -- valiantly and successfully defended their country against overwhelming odds at the Battle of Puebla.

Today we not only celebrate that determination, commitment to freedom and love of country, but also the many gifts Mexican-Americans share with our nation every day. Their many contributions have enriched America, making us a better and stronger country because of their voice, thoughts, and spirit.
