                  PRESIDENT CLINTON NAMES OLIVER P. GARZA
                      AS U.S. AMBASSADOR TO NICARAGUA

     The President announced today his intent to nominate Oliver P.

Garza to be U.S. Ambassador to the Republic of Nicaragua.

Mr. Oliver P. Garza, of San Antonio, Texas, is a Career Member of the Senior Foreign Service, Class of Minister-Counselor. He joined the Foreign Service in l97l and is presently serving as the U.S. Consul General in Guadalajara, Mexico. Prior to his posting to Guadalajara, Mr. Garza's assignments have included: Deputy Chief of Mission in Bogota, Colombia and Panama; Minister-Counselor for Administrative Affairs in Seoul, Korea; Deputy Executive Director for the Department of State's Bureau of Near Eastern and South Asian Affairs, and Special Assistant (on detail) to the Office of the Vice President (National Narcotics Border Interdiction System).

Mr. Garza holds a B.A. Degree from St. Mary's University, Class of l970. Mr. Garza is also a graduate of the National Defense University, National War College Class of l988.
