                  PRESIDENT CLINTON NAMES GWEN C. CLARE
              AS U.S. AMBASSADOR TO THE REPUBLIC OF ECUADOR

     The President announced today his intent to nominate Gwen C. Clare

to be U.S. Ambassador to the Republic of Ecuador.

Ms. Gwen Clare, of Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, is a Career Member of the Senior Foreign Service, Class of Counselor. She has served in Lisbon, Santiago, Lima, Guayaquil, San Salvador, and Sao Paulo. A graduate of the National War College and the National Foreign Affairs Training Center at the Department of State, Ms. Clare also spent the year of 1983-1984 as a Congressional Fellow of the American Political Science Association.

A native of Washington, D.C., she is an alumna of the George Washington University. Ms. Clare originally entered the Foreign Service in 1967.
