STATEMENT BY THE PRESS SECRETARY

Visit of Hungarian President Goncz

The White House is pleased to announce that Hungarian President Arpad Goncz will pay a State Visit to Washington, D.C. from June 7-9. The visit will celebrate Hungary's long struggle for freedom, democracy and human rights and President Goncz's personal contribution to it, including his role in the 1956 Hungarian revolution for which he was imprisoned for six years. Since 1989, President Goncz has played a pivotal role in Hungary's successful efforts to build a vibrant democracy and free-market economy. The two presidents will discuss Hungary's engagement in NATO, the situation in Kosovo and efforts to stabilize Southeast Europe over the long term.
