THE WHITE HOUSE

Office of the Vice President

For Immediate Release April 14, 1999

STATEMENT BY THE VICE PRESIDENT

President Clinton and I are committed to ensuring the most accurate census possible in the year 2000. I feel it is vitally important that we count every American for one simple reason: every single American counts.

Unfortunately, today the House of Representatives passed legislation that could seriously undermine that goal.

If enacted, HR 472, a bill requiring a Post Census Local Review program for Census 2000, would disrupt census operations by allowing 39,000 local governments to contest counts within their jurisdictions long after April 1, 2000. In fact, this measure would reduce the accuracy of Census 2000 and seriously disrupt its schedule.

President Clinton and I remain committed to helping make next year's census, the first of the 21st Century, the fairest, most accurate, and most complete census for America.
