                 PRESIDENT CLINTON NAMES T. MICHAEL KERR 
             AS ADMINISTRATOR OF THE WAGE AND HOUR DIVISION 
                        AT THE DEPARTMENT OF LABOR

The President today announced his intent to nominate T. Michael Kerr to serve as Administrator of the Wage and Hour Division at the Department of Labor.

Mr. T. Michael Kerr, of Washington, D.C., currently serves as Deputy Assistant Secretary for the Employment Standards Administration and as Deputy Assistant Secretary for Workers' Compensation Programs at the Department of Labor. From 1994-1997, he was Executive Secretary of the Department of Labor. From 1984-1993, he served as Assistant Director for Legislation of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME). From 1979-1981, he served as Director of the Office of Congressional Liaison at the Department of Health and Human Services.

Mr. Kerr received a B.A. degree from Tufts University, and a Masters degree in City Planning from Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

The Administrator of the Wage and Hour Division enforces the Fair Labor Standards Act and a variety of other federal labor legislation. The Division is responsible for safeguarding the health and welfare of workers by discouraging excessively long hours of work, protecting the health and well-being of minors in the workforce, enforcing immigration-related programs, and predetermining prevailing wage rates for federal construction contracts.
