THE WHITE HOUSE

Office of the Press Secretary

For Immediate Release March 17, 1999

The following is the text of the citation for the Presidential Medal of Freedom, which the President will present to George Mitchell:

Throughout his extraordinary career, George Mitchell has strived
to make real his vision of public service: "to act for the
larger and common good." Born of immigrant roots in his beloved
Maine, he learned early the importance of hard work and devotion
to family. As a prosecutor, judge, United States Senator and
Majority Leader, he kept faith with those values and displayed a
deep love of country and commitment to justice. As a determined
and creative international statesman, he was instrumental in
forging the historic Good Friday peace accord for Northern
Ireland. For his outstanding service, both at home and abroad,
George Mitchell deserves our lasting gratitude.
