             PRESIDENT CLINTON NAMES MERVYN M. MOSBACKER, JR. 
                       AS UNITED STATES ATTORNEY 
                   FOR THE SOUTHERN DISTRICT OF TEXAS

The President today announced his intent to nominate Mervyn M. Mosbacker, Jr. to serve as United States Attorney for the Southern District of Texas.

Mr. Mervyn M. Mosbacker, of Brownsville, Texas, has been an Assistant U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Texas since 1988, serving as the attorney-in-charge of the Brownsville office. His significant prosecutions include major public corruption, drug trafficking, and fraud cases. He was a prosecutor with the Cameron County District Attorney's Office from 1982-1988, serving as an Assistant District Attorney, Chief Felony Prosecutor, and as First Assistant District Attorney from 1986-1988. He previously served as a clerk for U.S. District Court Judge Filemon B. Vela in Brownsville and as a science teacher in the Brownsville Independent School District.

Mr. Mosbacker received an A.A. degree from Texas Southmost College, a B.A. degree from the University of Texas, and a J.D. degree from the University of Texas Law School.

United States Attorneys are the chief federal prosecutors and law enforcement officers for the 94 federal judicial districts. They have principal responsibility for the prosecution of federal matters in their district.
