THE WHITE HOUSE

Office of the Vice President

For Immediate Release February 26, 1999
                    STATEMENT BY VICE PRESIDENT GORE
ON ADDITIONAL FUNDS FOR AMERICA'S FARMERS

President Clinton and I are calling on Congress to provide additional funds to help our nation's farmers.

Despite our strong economy, thousands of productive family farms in America continue to face severe economic pressures. We need to act and act quickly to help good people who are losing their land through no fault of their own.

That is why President Clinton and I are calling on Congress to provide the Department of Agriculture's Farm Service Agency $152 million in additional funds under a supplemental appropriation to last year's budget. These funds would allow this agency to provide needed credit and sought-after services to hurting farmers and ranchers.

This proposal will put more cash in the pockets of America's farming families, and improve their creditworthiness in their discussions with banks next spring.
