THE WHITE HOUSE

Office of the Vice President

For Immediate Release February 12, 1999
STATEMENT BY VICE PRESIDENT AL GORE
ON SENATE ACQUITTAL OF THE PRESIDENT

The Senate has voted; I agree with the result. But whatever our individual opinions of the outcome, let us all understand that today's vote -- rather than being a victory for any person or party -- is instead a reaffirmation of the wisdom of our founders and their design of our Constitution. Now we must rededicate ourselves to the higher purposes to which we have an opportunity to turn.

We need to heal the wounds of this impeachment debate, and turn our attention to revitalizing our cities, saving Social Security for our children, passing a Patients' Bill of Rights, renewing and rebuilding our schools, protecting our environment, and building a strong economy for the 21st Century.

I know that President Clinton is eager to work across party lines on these and other challenges. And I know that his leadership will continue to be good for the United States of America.
