STATEMENT BY THE PRESS SECRETARY

National Security Advisor Samuel R. Berger announced today the appointment of Miles M. Lackey as Special Assistant to the President and Senior Director for Legislative Affairs, effective January 24, 1999. Mr. Lackey will succeed Mara Rudman.

Mr. Lackey has been Legislative Director and Research Director of the Office of the Democratic Whip of the U.S. House of Representatives since 1991. He has also held numerous congressional staff positions since 1987, including Associate Staff Member of the House Committee on Rules and Foreign Affairs Legislative Assistant to several Members of the House of Representatives.

A native of North Carolina, Mr. Lackey is a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He received his M.A. in International Relations from Yale University and an M.A. in Ethics from the Yale Divinity School.
