              STATEMENT BY VICE PRESIDENT GORE ON DECISION OF
                       BALTIMORE MAYOR KURT SCHMOKE
                          NOT TO SEEK REELECTION

As Mayor of Baltimore, Kurt Schmoke has been one of our nation's most outstanding civic leaders.

For more then a decade, Mayor Schmoke has made revitalizing the city of Baltimore his life's work. Under his leadership, more children and adults are receiving a good education, more businesses are investing in the city and creating new jobs, and more officers are on the street fighting to stop crime and drug use.

I know that Tipper and I speak for families all over Baltimore, when we say that we will miss Kurt's leadership, his efforts to partner with this Administration on important issues, his courage to take on difficult problems, and his work to make Baltimore a more livable community.

Tipper and I wish the very best to Kurt and his wife Patricia. Though we will miss the Mayor's leadership in Baltimore, I am confident he will continue his work to improve the quality of life for all Americans.
