THE WHITE HOUSE

Office of the Vice President

For Immediate Release November 30, 1998
                    STATEMENT OF VICE PRESIDENT GORE
ON THE DEATH OF FORMER CONGRESSMAN DANTE B. FASCELL

Tipper and I were deeply saddened to learn of the death of Dante Fascell, the former Florida Congressman.

Dante was a true American success story, the son of Italian immigrants who grew up to serve with distinction for 38 years in Congress, the last nine as chairman of what was then the House Foreign Affairs Committee. I was proud to serve as a House member with Dante, and I greatly admired his commitment to a bipartisan foreign policy that he believed was so vital for America's peace and security.

While he skillfully managed the business of his committee, Dante took center stage on the key foreign policy issues that faced the nation, whether they involved Israel, Cuba, arms control, foreign aid, or Jewish emigration from the Soviet Union. His efforts in Congress, though, also included domestic policy, and he strongly supported civil rights legislation and efforts to restore the Florida Everglades.

The people of south Florida, and of the nation at large, will greatly miss Dante. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family.
