                     SENATOR DANIEL PATRICK MOYNIHAN

Daniel Patrick Moynihan's retirement from the Senate will mark a true milestone in the history of our nation's public life.

Senator Moynihan has been both an extraordinary public servant as well as a visionary thinker. Over the years, his interests have ranged from welfare to family policy, from Social Security to tax policy, from foreign affairs to government secrecy. To each endeavor, he has offered startlingly fresh perspectives and challenged old views. More than anyone, Senator Moynihan has been consistently ahead of the curve.

From his writings and speeches, and from our private conversations, I have learned a great deal from Senator Moynihan. Tipper and I wish the Senator and his wife, Elizabeth, all the best in the days ahead.
