The President today awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom to Dante Fascell. The text of the citation reads as follows:
DANTE B. FASCELL
Courageous in war and in public service, Dante Fascell has contributed immeasurably to America's national security, to our leadership in the global economy, and to our quality of life. Throughout his remarkable 38-year career in Congress, he proved himself a man of reason and of conscience. Representing his district with distinction, Dante Fascell demonstrated an unwavering commitment to civil rights, environmental protection, and openness in Government. An outstanding chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, he supported emerging democracies, pressed for arms control, and promoted fair trade and dialogue among nations. For his dedicated service, his personal warmth, and his compassion for those in need, America offers Dante Fascell its deepest gratitude.
