STATEMENT BY THE PRESS SECRETARY

The Washington Summit at Wye River

President Clinton and Secretary Albright announced today that they will be hosting Prime Minister Netanyahu, Chairman Arafat and their respective delegations at a Summit meeting at Wye River Conference Center in Maryland. The Summit will open on October 15, 1998.

The objective of the Summit is to work toward an IsraeliPalestinian agreement on interim issues based on the ideas presented by the United States. This agreement will launch permanent status negotiations which are intended to create a durable and lasting peace between Israelis and Palestinians.
