              STATEMENT BY VICE PRESIDENT GORE ON COMMITTEE'S
                       VOTE TO DENY FUNDING FOR TVA

      I am deeply disappointed that, earlier today, a Congressional

Conference Committee denied funding for TVA's non-power programs.

TVA's longstanding commitment to the residents of the Tennessee Valley includes a history of providing non-power resources such as navigation and flood control. That's why the Administration remained so strongly committed to TVA and included $70 million in its 1999 budget.

The Conference Committee's action in zeroing out TVA is completely misguided, unjustified, unfair, and it seriously undermines TVA's important role in enhancing the Tennessee Valley.
