STATEMENT BY THE PRESS SECRETARY

           President to Meet with Prime Minister Netanyahu and
                        Chairman Arafat Next Week

President Clinton spoke this afternoon with Chairman Yasser Arafat and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The President discussed the state of the Middle East peace process with both leaders, following up on Special Representative Dennis Ross' recent trip to the region.

Taking advantage of their presence in New York for the opening of the United Nations General Assembly, the President invited Chairman Arafat and Prime Minister Netanyahu to meet him next week to continue the effort to get the peace process back on track. Prime Minister Netanyahu will meet President Clinton at the White House Monday morning before returning to Israel for Yom Kippur. Chairman Arafat will meet the President at the White House later in the week.
