                  STATEMENT BY VICE PRESIDENT GORE
ON THE DEATH OF FLORENCE GRIFFITH JOYNER

Washington, DC -- Tipper and I were deeply saddened to learn of the untimely death of Florence Griffith Joyner. We extend our heartfelt condolences to her family and friends.

"Flo Jo", as she was more commonly known, stunned the world at the 1988 World Olympics with her speed, her style and, above it all, her charm. That year, Flo Jo not only won three gold medals -- she won the hearts of the American people.

Tipper was pleased to serve with her on the President's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports as national spokesperson for the youth fitness campaign. Her commitment and dedication to physical fitness and her example to America's youth will continue to inspire us all for years to come. She will be truly missed.
