STATEMENT OF VICE PRESIDENT GORE

ON HEADWATERS FOREST

On behalf of President Clinton, I applaud the California Legislature's action early today to protect Headwaters Forest.

By providing the state's share of funding needed to acquire these magnificent ancient redwoods, California's elected leaders are helping to preserve for future generations a vital, irreplaceable piece of America's natural legacy. Their action helps sustain both the incomparable environment and the economy of California's North Coast.

I commend state Senator John Burton for his leadership in crafting a state funding agreement as well as U.S. Senator Dianne Feinstein for her continued efforts on behalf of Headwaters. We will continue to work with the state, the public, and the Pacific Lumber Company in the coming months to complete the acquisition of Headwaters Forest.
