                    STATEMENT OF VICE PRESIDENT GORE 
                             ON THE DEATH OF 
              RETIRED SUPREME COURT JUSTICE LEWIS F. POWELL

I was deeply saddened to hear of the passing of retired Supreme Court Justice Lewis F. Powell. I extend my heartfelt condolences to his family and friends.

Justice Powell was the type of individual who placed greater importance on societal contributions than individual accomplishments. And as a soldier, a lawyer, a leader in the desegregation movement, and as a Justice, Lewis F. Powell made many significant contributions over his lifetime to the health and history of this nation.

His dedicated service, both on and off the court, will be long remembered. All of us will feel the void created by his absence.
