For Immediate Release July 31, 1998
                 PRESIDENT CLINTON NAMES MITCHELL BERGER
AS CHAIR OF THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS
OF THE STUDENT LOAN MARKETING ASSOCIATION

The President today announced his intent to appoint Mitchell Berger as Chair of the Board of Directors of the Student Loan Marketing Association (Sallie Mae). The President initially appointed Mr. Berger as a member of the Sallie Mae Board of Directors in March, 1994.

Mr. Mitchell W. Berger, of Parkland, Florida, has been a member of the Sallie Mae Board of Directors since March 1994, and is the Founder and President of Berger Davis & Singerman, a law firm located in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Mr. Berger was in private practice in Chattanooga, Tennessee from 1981 to 1985, before founding his own firm in Fort Lauderdale. In addition to his law practice, Mr. Berger is a member of the Board of Governors of the South Florida Water Management District and of the Board of Governors of Nova University School of Management and Business.

Mr. Berger received his AB degree in Economics from Lafayette College in 1977, and his JD from Temple University in 1980.

The Student Loan Marketing Corporation was created by an act of Congress in 1972, to provide funding and liquidity for federally guaranteed education loans, and in 1996, Congress enacted and President Clinton signed legislation authorizing its restructuring as a fully private, state-chartered corporation. Sallie Mae is the nation's largest source of funding and servicing support for education loans for students and their parents.
