                  STATEMENT BY VICE PRESIDENT GORE ON
                TENNESSEE BEING DECLARED A DISASTER AREA

President Clinton declared today that a major disaster exits in my home state of Tennessee. This declaration will bring much-needed resources to those areas that have been recently damaged by flooding and severe storms. These areas consist of Lewis and Lawrence Counties.

Under the coordination of the Federal Emergency Management Agency, the federal government will provide public assistance to help repair and replace storm-damaged public facilities.

I want to assure the people of Tennessee that we will do everything we can to see that Tennessee receives available assistance for as long as necessary.

I know that the many storms and floods that the state has had to struggle with over the past weeks have taken a tremendous toll -- especially on those who have lost loved ones and homes. I want all of those affected to know: We are keeping you in our thoughts and prayers.
