THE WHITE HOUSE

Office of the Vice President

For Immediate Release July 22, 1998
                    STATEMENT OF VICE PRESIDENT GORE
ON THE DEATH OF ALAN SHEPARD

Tipper and I were saddened to hear about the death today of Alan Shepard. The Wright Brothers may have taken our nation to the clouds, but Alan Shepard took us into space. He carried the dreams of a nation, and he made our spirits soar.

Looking back at earth during his historic mission, Alan Shepard said "what a beautiful sight." We felt the same way looking up at him. He opened a new world to us and sparked a thousand dreams. History will never forget him, and neither will we.

We send our deepest condolences to both Alan Shepard's family as well as his former colleagues in the Navy and at NASA.
