THE WHITE HOUSE

Office of the Vice President

For Immediate Release July 17, 1998
STATEMENT BY VICE PRESIDENT GORE ON
FUNDS TO HELP LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICIALS
SHARE INFORMATION TO BETTER FIGHT CRIME

I am very pleased to announce that the Justice Department will provide $4.3 million to strengthen the Regional Information Sharing System (RISS) project.

RISS, a secure Intranet that allows our country's law enforcement officers to obtain and share the information they need to investigate and prosecute crimes across state lines, is a prime example of how we can use technology to ensure the public safety.

Between 1986 and 1997, information shared over the RISS system helped law enforcement officials make over 76,000 arrests, seize over $10 billion worth of narcotics, and capture over $21 million in assets.

These results speak for themselves. This system works. And with the additional funds that the Justice Department is providing to upgrade and speed the system, it will only become more effective.
