THE WHITE HOUSE

Office of the Vice President

For Immediate Release July 16, 1998
                    STATEMENT BY VICE PRESIDENT GORE
ON AGREEMENT BETWEEN EPA AND AUTOMAKERS
TO PRODUCE CLEANER CARS AT LESS COST

The Clinton Administration is proposing procedures today to better ensure that new cars meet the health standards for tailpipe emissions.

This action not only will provide cleaner air and greater public health protection for all Americans, it will save the auto manufacturing industry an estimated $55 million and thousands of hours a year in reduced paperwork.

This is another important step by the Administration to reinvent government in common-sense ways so that is works better and costs less.
