For Immediate Release July 12, 1998

STATEMENT BY THE PRESS SECRETARY

Violence in Northern Ireland

The President was deeply saddened by the deaths last night of three innocent children in a sectarian attack in Northern Ireland. In recent weeks, the people there, of both traditions, have expressed their belief in peace. However, extremists continue to try to drag Northern Ireland back into a cycle of violence.

On behalf of all Americans, we extend our condolences to the family of the three boys, to the community where they lived and to all those affected by this tragedy. We hope their unnecessary deaths remind people of the costs of confrontation. The promise of peace is best achieved through dialogue and reconciliation.
