                           PRESIDENT CLINTON 
            NAMES CAROLYN H. BECRAFT AS ASSISTANT SECRETARY 
              OF THE NAVY FOR MANPOWER AND RESERVE AFFAIRS

The President today announced his intent to nominate Carolyn H. Becraft as Assistant Secretary of the Navy for Manpower and Reserve Affairs.

Ms. Carolyn Becraft, of Burke, Virginia, is currently the Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Personnel Support, Families, and Education with direct responsibility for programs and policies that support community quality of life programs on military installations worldwide. She assumed this position on October 1, 1993. She was a consultant to the Women's Research & Education Institute from 1990 to 1991, and from 1992 to 1993. She was Director of Communications at the International Center for Research on Women from 1991 to 1992. Ms. Becraft was an independent consultant from 1989 to 1991. She was a Research Associate for Decision Resources Corporation from 1987 to 1989, and Director of the Women and the Military Project for the Women's Equity Action League from 1982 to 1987. She was Chair of the Army Family Action Committee from 1980 to 1982, and an Education Specialist with the Department of the Army from 1978 to 1982. Ms. Becraft was a Commissioned Officer in the U.S. Army from 1966 to 1971.

Ms. Becraft received her B.S. from the University of North Dakota in 1966, and her M.S. in Education from the University of Southern California in 1978.

The Assistant Secretary of the Navy for Manpower and Reserve Affairs is responsible for overall supervision of manpower, personnel, and reserve component affairs for the Department of the Navy, which encompasses both the U.S. Navy and the U.S. Marine Corps..
