                 PRESIDENT CLINTON NAMES ERIC D. NEWSOM 
          AS ASSISTANT SECRETARY FOR POLITICAL-MILITARY AFFAIRS 
                    AT THE U.S. DEPARTMENT OF STATE

The President today announced his intent to nominate Eric D. Newsom to be Assistant Secretary of State for Political-Military Affairs.

Mr. Eric D. Newsom, of Modesto, California, has served nearly 30 years in the federal government, as a Foreign Service Officer and as a staff member of the U.S. Senate, and is currently at the State Department. Mr. Newsom received a B.A. in History in 1965, and an M.A. in History in 1967, from the University of California at Berkeley.

The Assistant Secretary of State assists the Secretary and the Under Secretary for Arms Control and International Security Affairs in discharging the Secretary's responsibilities for continuous supervision and general direction of arms control, non-proliferation, regional security, and export control policy matters.
