                         PRESIDENT CLINTON DECLARES
                      MAJOR DISASTER EXISTS IN FLORIDA

The President today declared a major disaster exists in the State of Florida and ordered Federal aid to supplement state and local recovery efforts in the area threatened by extreme fire hazards on May 25, 1998, and continuing.

The President's action makes Federal funding available for direct Federal assistance for emergency measures, authorized under the Stafford Act, as coordinated with other Federal agencies to save lives, protect property and public health and safety, and lessen or avert the threat of a catastrophe in Brevard, Columbia, Duval, Flagler, Putnam, Seminole, St. Johns and Wakulla Counties.

The Agency said that surveys are continuing in other areas, and additional counties may be added after the assessments are completed.
