                           PRESIDENT CLINTON 
                 NAMES GEORGE MU AS U.S. AMBASSADOR 
                  TO THE REPUBLIC OF COTE D'IVOIRE

The President today announced his intent to nominate George Mu to be U.S. Ambassador to the Republic of Cote d'Ivoire.

Mr. George Mu, of San Francisco, California, entered the Foreign Service in l969, and started his career in Singapore, followed by postings to Hong Kong, Taipei, and Tokyo. He returned to the Department of Commerce in l983, where he served as Deputy Director in the Office of Japan followed by assignments in Korea, Canada, Tokyo, and the U.S. Mission to the European Union in Brussels. Mr. Mu was appointed by the President to the rank of Career Minister in l992, becoming the highest ranking Foreign Service Officer in the Commercial Service.

Born and raised in San Francisco, Mr. Mu is a graduate of the University of California in Berkeley.
