                     PRESIDENT CLINTON ANNOUNCES 
                     MARIA ECHAVESTE AS ASSISTANT 
              TO THE PRESIDENT AND DEPUTY CHIEF OF STAFF
                          AT THE WHITE HOUSE

The President today announced his intent to name Maria Echaveste as Assistant to the President and Deputy Chief of Staff.

Ms. Maria Echaveste has been serving in the White House as Assistant to the President and Director of Public Liaison since February 1997. Before coming to the White House, Ms. Echaveste was at the Department of Labor as the Wage and Hour Administrator. There she was responsible for the management and direction of programs including minimum wage, child labor and family and medical leave. Before joining the Labor Department, Ms. Echaveste was Deputy Director of Personnel during the 1993 Clinton transition. Prior to joining the administration, Ms. Echaveste was special counsel in bankruptcy for the law firm of Rosenman & Colin.

Ms. Echaveste was born in Texas but grew up in the central and coastal valleys of California. She received a Bachelor of Arts in anthropology from Stanford University in 1976, and a Juris Doctor from the University of California at Berkeley in 1980.
