                 THE PRESIDENT NOMINATES CARL J. BARBIER 
                          TO THE FEDERAL BENCH

The President today nominated Carl J. Barbier to serve as a United States District Court Judge for the Eastern District of Louisiana.

Mr. Barbier, of New Orleans, Louisiana, received his undergraduate degree from Southeastern Louisiana University in 1966, and his J.D. degree from Loyola University School of Law in 1970. Mr. Barbier served as a law clerk to the Honorable William Redmann of the Louisiana Court of Appeal for the Fourth Circuit from 1969 to 1970, and to the Honorable Fred Cassibry of the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Louisiana from 1970 to 1971. He then practiced law with the law firms of Badeaux and Discon from 1971 to 1973; Badeaux, Discon, Cumberland and Barbier from 1974 to 1982; the Law Office of Carl J. Barbier from 1983 to 1984; and Barbier and Cumberland from 1985 to 1992. Since 1992, Mr. Barbier has practiced in the Barbier Law Firm.
