                   STATEMENT BY VICE PRESIDENT GORE 
                 ON COMPREHENSIVE TOBACCO LEGISLATION

This week, after years of hard work, the Senate will consider comprehensive, bipartisan legislation that dramatically reduces underage smoking, substantially raises the price of cigarettes, and changes the way tobacco companies do business forever. This legislation is fully consistent with the five principles the President has established for a meaningful tobacco bill. And it is a critical step toward our ultimate goal -- protecting America's children and saving American lives.

I am pleased that this legislation is reaching the Senate floor, and I urge all members of the Senate to seize the momentum on this issue. This must be the week we transform the issue of tobacco from a third rail to a second chance for America's children.
