THE WHITE HOUSE

Office of the Vice President

For Immediate Release May 14, 1998
                   STATEMENT BY VICE PRESIDENT GORE
ON THE DEATH OF MARJORY STONEMAN DOUGLAS

WASHINGTON, DC -- Tipper and I were deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Marjory Stoneman Douglas. Marjory was one of the true guiding lights of America's conservation movement. Through her tireless advocacy and her powerful prose, she led the fight to save Florida's Everglades, her beloved "River of Grass." I am thankful she lived long enough to see the fruits of her efforts.

As President Clinton and I have worked to restore South Florida's fragile ecosystem, Marjory's contributions have been a constant source of inspiration. This past December, I had the honor of dedicating 1.3 million acres of the Everglades as "the Marjory Stoneman Douglas Wilderness." I am pleased that her legacy will live on through this magnificent natural treasure.
