THE WHITE HOUSE

Office of the Vice President

For Immediate Release May 13, 1998
STATEMENT BY VICE PRESIDENT GORE ON NEW FAA
                       SAFETY INSPECTION PROGRAM

The Air Transportation Oversight System announced today by Transportation Secretary Rodney Slater and Federal Aviation Administrator Jane Garvey is an excellent example of common sense government working in partnership with industry and labor to prevent aviation accidents.

Last month, I joined Secretary Slater and Administrator Garvey to announce our Safer Skies agenda to reduce aviation accidents by 80 percent over the next 10 years. This new oversight system will help us reach our goal by giving our nation's aviation safety inspectors the tools to spot safety trends and catch problems before they lead to an accident.

I am impressed by the hard work of the men and women who have developed this proactive approach to improving aviation inspections. Their dedication and teamwork will make the safest skies in the world even safer. The American people expect and deserve nothing less.
