THE WHITE HOUSE

Office of the Vice President

For Immediate Release May 8, 1998
                    STATEMENT BY VICE PRESIDENT GORE
                       ON NEW MONTHLY JOB NUMBERS

This morning, our Labor Department has reported that unemployment in the United States of America has now fallen to 4.3%, the lowest in 28 years.

In the month of April alone, our economy added 262,000 new jobs. Wages continue to rise and inflation remains low and stable. That means that our economy has now created 15.2 million new jobs. . .

It's obvious from this morning's announcement that America's economic engine is truly humming -- lower unemployment, higher wages, more jobs, and low inflation -- proof positive that all across the United States of America, we're headed in the right direction.
