STATEMENT BY THE PRESS SECRETARY

         President to Address the United Nations General Assembly
               Special Session on International Drug Control

President Clinton will travel to New York City on June 8, 1998 to address the United Nations General Assembly at the opening of the Special Session on International Drug Control. The three-day Special Session will mark the 10th anniversary of the 1988 United Nations Convention Against Illicit Traffic in Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances. The 1988 Convention, which has been ratified by the United States and more than 140 other countries, provides a comprehensive framework for international cooperation in combating the illicit drug problem.
