STATEMENT BY THE PRESS SECRETARY

Confirmation of Sergey Kiriyenko as Russian Prime Minister

Today, the Russian Parliament approved President Yeltsin's nominee for Prime Minister, Sergey Kiriyenko. We look forward to working with Prime Minister Kiriyenko and his government on the wide range of issues facing our two governments. The United States supports Russia's transition to a market-based democracy and will continue to work closely with Russia to further its integration into global economic and security institutions.

The Vice President called to congratulate the new Prime Minister today. The Vice President and the Prime Minister agreed in their conversation to continue the work of the U.S.-Russian Joint Commission on Economic and Technological Cooperation.
