THE WHITE HOUSE

Office of the Vice President

For Immediate Release March 30, 1998

STATEMENT OF VICE PRESIDENT GORE

ON HOUSE CAMPAIGN FINANCE REFORM LEGISLATION

Continuing its efforts to prevent Congress from enacting meaningful, bipartisan campaign finance reform, the Republican leadership has now abandoned traditional House procedures to prevent passage of the Shays-Meehan legislation that would effectively ban soft money from our political system.

Most House members support this proposal, as do most Senators. So do most Americans. The Republican leadership should allow each House member to vote on this key issue. Banning soft money and assuring that everyone's campaign expenditures are fully disclosed are reforms that Congress can and should enact now.
