PRESIDENT CLINTON DECLARES DISASTER EXISTS IN MARSHALL ISLANDS

The President today declared a major disaster exists in the Republic of the Marshall Islands and ordered Federal aid to supplement recovery efforts in the area struck by a severe drought beginning in January 17, 1998.

The President's action makes Federal funding available to affected local governments in Ailinglaplap, Ailuk, Arno, Aur, Bikini, Ebeye, Ebon, Enewetak, Jabat, Jaluit, Kili, Kwajalein, Lae, Lib, Likiep, Majuro, Maloelap, Mejit, Mili, Namorik, Namu, Ujae, Utrik, Wotho, and Wotje.

Federal funding is available to eligible local governments on a cost-sharing basis for emergency protective measures under the Public Assistance program as a result of the severe drought. Federal funding is also available on a cost share basis for hazard mitigation measures.
