STATEMENT BY THE PRESS SECRETARY

Continuation of UN Sanctions on Libya

Meeting this morning, the UN Security Council has again continued the sanctions imposed on Libya for its failure to turn over the two defendants in the terrorist bombing of Pan Am 103 over Lockerbie in 1988. Libya has tried to avoid, evade and explain away its obligations. The Council has made clear that it accepts nothing less than full compliance. We remain mindful of the central reality of this case: that 270 innocent men, women and children, from more than 20 countries, were murdered, and that Libya continues to prevent a trial of the defendants.

We are determined to obtain justice in this case. Justice will be served if Libya does now what the Council has required and what Libya has resisted doing for six years: hand over these indicted defendants.
