                     ON THE SENATE'S CONFIRMATION OF 
                   DR. DAVID SATCHER AS SURGEON GENERAL

I am very pleased that the Senate took action today to confirm Dr. David Satcher as the Nation's new Surgeon General. I know Dr. Satcher from his work in my home State of Tennessee, and I have always been impressed with both his character and his commitment to public health.

On a personal level, I like Dr. Satcher very much. On a professional level, I greatly respect him. I am confident that he will serve the citizens of this country with distinction, and that he will work to improve the Nation's public health.
