             VICE PRESIDENT GORE, HOUSING SECRETARY CUOMO 
           TOUT NEW BUDGET TO SUPPORT AMERICA'S COMMUNITIES

WASHINGTON, DC -- Vice President Gore joined Housing Secretary Andrew Cuomo today in detailing how the Administration's $25 billion budget for the Department of Housing and Urban Department -- an increase of $900 million over the 1998 level -- would benefit America's communities.

"The cornerstone of the Clinton Administration's efforts to support America's communities is the package of initiatives put together by the Department of Housing and Urban Development," the Vice President said in a conference call with mayors.

"This HUD budget offers, no new bureaucracies -- just renewed efforts to build attractive neighborhoods, safe streets, and thriving businesses. We are working to promote economic opportunity with public and private partnerships."

Vice President Gore and Secretary Cuomo announced the budget estimates in a call with many of the nation's mayors, including:
