                  STATEMENT OF THE VICE PRESIDENT 
                    ON LOW EMISSION VEHICLES

I was very pleased to learn that Ford, Chrysler and General Motors will soon be offering cars that produce 70 percent less pollution. I commend the Environmental Protection Agency for helping to achieve this voluntary commitment.

Last month, the Big Three unveiled prototypes that will help combat global warming through dramatically improved fuel efficiency. Today, they are taking an important step to curb smog and protect public health. This demonstrates once again that government and industry, working in partnership, can achieve cost-effective environmental gains.

With this spirit of innovation and commitment, I'm confident we can tackle our environmental challenges, keep our economy strong, and deliver the clean cars America needs.
