STATEMENT OF THE VICE PRESIDENT

Yesterday's announcement by General Motors and Ford that they can build a new generation of cars that will dramatically reduce pollution is an important step in the right direction. It shows that through ingenuity and innovation, American industry can help protect our environment while strengthening our economy and creating new jobs.

I have always believed that we can clean up our environment -- and get other countries to do the same -- in a way that truly strengthens our economy. Ultimately, that is how we will meet the challenge of global warming. America must be the nation that builds and sells to the world the new products and technologies that reduce pollution -- an estimated $400 billion market worldwide. That is why we will propose new tax cuts for businesses and individuals that develop, buy, and use products that reduce pollution.

I know America can rise to this challenge, protecting our environment as we expand economic opportunity for our people.
