STATEMENT BY THE PRESS SECRETARY

Telemarketing Fraud Report

The President welcomes the report of the United States-Canada Working Group on cross-border telemarketing fraud. He and Canadian Prime Minister Jean Chretien directed preparation of the report when they met in Washington last April.

Telemarketing fraud is one of the most pervasive forms of white-collar crime in the United States and Canada, and it poses a particular problem for the elderly. It is a serious and growing cross-border problem which both countries are determined to address. The report makes an extremely timely and useful contribution to these efforts by analyzing how the crime is committed, legal options to combat it, and specific ways to increase law enforcement cooperation.
