THE WHITE HOUSE

Office of the Vice President

For Immediate Release October 29, 1997

STATEMENT OF THE VICE PRESIDENT

I am pleased that the House today sent a strong message to the Senate by soundly defeating an anti-immigrant, anti-family measure. By voting to defeat a motion which could have blocked a permanent extension of Section 245 (i) of the Immigration and Naturalization Act, the House voted to keep families together in the United States. I commend this action.

Section 245(i) allows certain immigrants who are eligible for residency to have their papers processed here in the United States rather than force them to return to their home country.

This is about families, and about whether the United States supports policies that help families stay together. This important immigration provision will allow thousands of future Americans -- who are in this country legally -- to process their applications for permanent residency in a humane and dignified manner.
